In a triumphant return to the top, the U.S. Jumping Team claimed victory at the prestigious Jumping Nations Cup of Rome CSIO5*, held at the historic Piazza di Siena. With a final score of just four faults over two rounds, the U.S. secured its first team win at this event since 2009 and sixth overall at the iconic venue. France followed in second with eight faults, while host nation Italy settled for third on 20.

This year’s winning team, McLain Ward, Laura Kraut, Lillie Keenan, and Karl Cook, was guided by Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, who praised the group for rising to the challenge, noting that three of the four riders were making their 5* Nations Cup debut with these mounts. “The two double clears from Lillie and McLain were needed, and it was McLain sealing the deal that really made the day even more special,” said Ridland. “There’s so much tradition here—you can feel it.”
Kicking off the U.S. team’s performance was veteran Laura Kraut with Bisquetta, posting a solid four-fault effort to start. Lillie Keenan and her up-and-coming mount Kick On impressed with two foot-perfect rounds, one of just five pairs in the competition to do so. “He absolutely loves his job and gets it,” said Keenan, who reflected on the team spirit of the day. “It felt like a real family and team win.”
Karl Cook and Caracole de la Roque, winners of last year’s Rolex Grand Prix in Rome, bounced back in round two to contribute a crucial clear after a rail in the first round. Finally, McLain Ward and his promising new partner Imperial HBF anchored the team with a double clear, securing the win and underlining the strength of their budding partnership.
The competition, set against the backdrop of the Villa Borghese gardens, was designed by Italy’s Uliano Vezzani and showcased both the technicality of elite show jumping and the grandeur of Roman sport tradition. The U.S. team’s confident, composed riding made for a memorable return to the top step of the podium.
Next up at Piazza di Siena: the €500,000 Rolex Grand Prix of Rome, set to begin Sunday, May 25.
